New York TImes article about 'dropping a friend can be like a divorce, complete with awkward exchanges, made-up excuses and lingering ill will.'

As I get older (and wiser) I realize that some of my friendships that worked years ago just aren't working now. However, a lot of them I want to continue. I like the people. We have history. Battle scars. Joyous moments. But talking about your work, two jobs ago, is not enough. The conversation is old and not going anywhere.
How do you keep that kind of friendship going?
One solultion is that both parties need to be willing to find a new common ground of interest. The operative word is 'both'. Both parties need to want to continue the friendship. Recently, I asked a friend to think about something we could do together, to 'upgrade' the relationship. I gave her some examples...like joing the same book club, checking out some museums, playing mah jong or golf.
This approach has worked for me. Mothers from my daughter's grade school years are now my mah jong playing friends. In those early years, all we did was talk about the kids, education and play dates. Now we have new things to talk about and have fun while we are doing it!
I read something years ago about how easy it was for kids to make friends. Playground friends. School friends. Activity friends. How different it was for adults to make new friends and develop them as we get older. What do you think?
